MacBook Wireless Airport Troubleshooting

May 24th, 2006

AppleNoticed that the Airport connection on my MacBook was dropping intermittently, say every half-hour or so. After a bit of circling around, I figured my LinkSys DI 614 router was the culprit, specifically a “4x” setting that is activated by default (under “Advaced -> Performance” for those that have this router).

Immediately I was noticing faster speeds and thought all was fixed, until I went over to my iMac which is also using Airport. It simply wasn’t recognizing the router at all. After a bit of hunting on the web, I found that the older Airport cards prefer yet another mode, which is Preamble type: Long Preamble. So this setting was changed (in the same place) and now both computers are working, with faster download speeds than before.
