MacBook Arrives; First Impressions
After obsessively tracking the computer via FedEx for the past few days, the MacBook was waiting for me when I got home. I’ve just started it up and am downloading a slew of software updates. Unpacking the machine was exciting; just like Christmas.
The keyboard feels better than I thought it would, mostly because it’s an integrated part of the case, rather than the squishy separate piece of the old iBook. The travel downwards is admittedly shallow, but it hasn’t bothered me yet. I think the solid feel makes up for it.
The button beneath the track pad however, is irritating me slightly. I think on the old iBook I had it was on the lower part of the case edge, whereas this button needs a vertical press. Hopefully I’ll get used to it.
As of yet, I haven’t noticed an inordinate amount of heat, nor the moo or the whine I’ve heard unfortunately so much about. Maybe those issues will manifest themselves later after I’ve given the MacBook a more thorough workout. But so far, so good. I’m smitten by this machine.
A few hours later, and still no mooing or whining. The area above the upper left corner of the keyboard is quite warm, nearly hot to the touch.
The speed of the machine has been surprisingly stable and fast. The only program that had some slowness was Front Row while browsing my music collection on a different computer. So far, so good. The only downside seems to be the heat and the trackpad button, which I’m getting used to.
Disclosure: I own a tiny amount of Apple stock.
