Hawaiian Vacation Summary

May 6th, 2006

WebomaticaAlthough I grew up in Hawaii, I haven’t lived there in over a decade so every time I return I always notice differences from mainland living. Here’s a short list of observations:

Local birds enjoy the slower pace of life, too: as your car approaches, they walk across the road and only take flight when you’re practically on top of them.

I got a nasty ankle sunburn, resulting in the thought that one should put suntan lotion everywhere, even in places you wouldn’t normally think to.

Cost of living is definitely more expensive, especially groceries and gas (with the exception of certain local food items).

Downtown Hilo pretty much shuts down on Sundays.

Lots of bugs in certain neighborhoods. Mosquitoes, cockroaches, termites, ants.

Pretty much all of the kitchy Hawaiian crap you can buy in Waikiki (and Ala Moana) isn’t really Hawaiian, it’s made in the Phillipines or Asia. I feel Ward Centre and Warehouse provides better Honolulu shopping and entertainment.

Poke was my preferred food of choice this vacation. At Daiei (or pretty much any local grocery store, including Costco) you can get a pound of fresh ahi limu poke for a little over $5. This is a freaking great deal if you are used to mainland prices.
